Recently, I was at a family event in the summer of 2023, and two people, whom I did not know very well, approached me to ask a few questions about what I do as a medium. They both mentioned that they were fearful of seeing a medium.
Why is it that people may have a fear of mediumship? There can be several reasons, and these fears can vary from person to person. Some common reasons why people may fear mediums include:
-
Fear of the unknown: Some individuals may not understand or have experiences with the loving and supportive nature of the spirit world. Without the context and experience of mediumship, it’s quite possible to have some fears or anxiety around it. For myself when I first started to see a medium, yes there was worry and anxiousness but that quickly came to pass as I settled into the experience with the medium.
-
Religious background and belief system: We are all brought up with a belief system even if we are not a religious person. Some beliefs in our society indicate that communication with the spirits of deceased loved ones is forbidden or a form of occult practice. People that hold part or all of these beliefs may fear a mediumship experience.
-
Fraudulent experiences or stories: Unfortunately in this field of being a medium, there have been cases of fraudulent mediums who prey on vulnerable individuals, promising to connect them with deceased loved ones in exchange for money. This tradition stems back centuries and is not new. The fear of being deceived or scammed can lead people to mistrust mediums.
-
Emotional Vulnerability: Many people seek out mediums in times of grief or emotional distress when they are particularly vulnerable. Their fear may stem from concerns about being emotionally manipulated or taken advantage of during such vulnerable moments. Often I hear a client’s concern about the possibility of hearing dark or bleak information about themselves or their loved ones. I reassure individuals that the spirit world is a loving and supportive place that does not want to harm or place harm on any one of us.
-
Personal Beliefs and Experiences: Past experiences or personal beliefs can play a significant role in shaping an individual’s fear of mediums. For example, someone who had a negative experience with a medium in the past may be more likely to fear or mistrust others in the same profession.
While I have had positive experiences over many years, I am very aware that some people may not have. Whenever I have had a reading from a trusted, reputable genuine medium, I was provided healing and warming experiences that I keep with me to this day. It has changed me for the better.
It’s important to note that not everyone fears mediums, and some people have positive experiences with them, finding comfort or healing. People’s beliefs, experiences, and cultural backgrounds can all influence their perceptions of mediums and whether they view them with fear or trust. At the beginning of each session, I check in with my client to ensure that their fears are alleviated. I am very much aware that people have concerns so I address them as soon as possible to allow the client the best experience.
