One of the questions I am often asked is, “Can you guarantee that my husband, wife, child, mother, father, or friend will come through in a reading?”
My answer is always the same:
No, and no ethical medium should ever make that promise.
While our love for those in Spirit remains strong and the bond between us never truly ends, mediumship does not work on demand. The Spirit world is not a telephone service where we dial a specific number and guarantee who will answer. Mediumship is a sacred blending of two worlds, and although we can set an intention for a loved one to communicate, the medium cannot control who chooses to step forward.
This may seem surprising to those seeking a reading, especially when there is one particular person they desperately wish to hear from. However, understanding how mediumship works helps explain why guarantees should never be made.
Love Creates the Connection
I firmly believe that love keeps us connected to those who have passed. Love does not end with physical death. Our loved ones remain aware of us, and in many cases, they are close by, supporting us, guiding us, and sharing in our life’s journey.

Because of that connection, many readings do result in communication from the person a client hopes to hear from. In fact, it happens quite often.
However, there are occasions when another family member or friend in Spirit steps forward first. Sometimes they have an important message to share. Sometimes they are simply the strongest communicator available at that moment. At other times, they may be the person most able to provide the evidence needed to establish the connection between the Spirit world and the sitter.
The medium cannot force a particular soul to communicate.
Mediums Do Not Control the Spirit World
One of the biggest misconceptions about mediumship is that the medium controls the communication. We do not. A medium’s role is to prepare themselves, raise their awareness, blend with Spirit, and communicate the information that is being presented. We work with the Spirit world; we do not command it.
Any medium who guarantees that a specific individual will come through is making a promise that is beyond their control.
An experienced medium may have confidence in their ability to establish a connection with Spirit, but they cannot ethically guarantee who will choose to communicate.
Honesty Matters
Trust is one of the most important foundations of a good reading.
An honest medium will explain before a reading begins that while every effort will be made to connect with Spirit, there are no guarantees regarding who will come through.
This transparency is important because it sets realistic expectations and protects the integrity of the work.
Mediumship is not about making promises. It is about providing evidence, healing, comfort, and validation when Spirit chooses to communicate.
When a medium is honest about the limitations of the process, it demonstrates professionalism, ethics, and respect for both the client and the Spirit world.
Why Refund Policies Matter
Because no ethical medium can guarantee a specific connection, many reputable mediums also have policies in place to protect their clients.
Personally, I believe that if a client is genuinely unhappy with the service they have received, that concern should be addressed respectfully and fairly.
A trusted medium understands that clients are often coming to a reading during vulnerable times in their lives. They may be grieving, seeking comfort, or hoping for reassurance that their loved one continues to exist beyond the physical world.
Providing a fair refund policy or satisfaction guarantee demonstrates confidence in the medium’s integrity and commitment to serving people honestly.
What Clients Should Look For
When choosing a medium, I encourage people to look for someone who:
- Explains how mediumship works.
- Does not make unrealistic promises.
- Does not guarantee a specific spirit will appear.
- Focuses on evidence and validation.
- Operates with honesty, compassion, and integrity.
- Is willing to discuss their policies openly.
These qualities are often better indicators of a professional medium than grand claims or extraordinary guarantees.
Final Thoughts
The truth is that mediumship is a beautiful partnership between the medium, the sitter, and the Spirit world.
Love creates the connection. Intention opens the door. Spirit provides the communication.
In most cases, our loved ones are close by, and remarkable connections occur. Yet no medium should ever guarantee that a specific individual will communicate because that decision ultimately belongs to Spirit.
The most ethical mediums are not the ones who promise certainty.
They are the ones who approach this sacred work with honesty, humility, integrity, and respect for both worlds.
After all, mediumship is not about controlling Spirit—it is about being open enough to listen.
