One of the questions I’m asked most often is, “Where do I start if I want to develop my mediumship?”
I hear this a lot during mediumship appointments, usually from people who feel drawn to the connection with Spirit and want to understand it more.
The truth is, every experienced medium once stood exactly where you are today — curious, excited, and maybe a little unsure.
The good news is that you don’t need to have all the answers before you begin. You just need an open mind, a willingness to learn, and the patience to let your abilities unfold naturally.
And that really is the beautiful part. Mediumship develops naturally and over time.
Start with Yourself
Before we can begin communicating with the Spirit world, we first need to become more aware of ourselves.
Mediumship isn’t about trying harder or forcing something to happen. In fact, it’s often the opposite. It’s about becoming quieter within yourself and learning to recognize your own thoughts, feelings, and imagination.
As you become more self-aware, you start to create more space in the mind. That’s often when you start noticing the subtle impressions and feelings through which Spirit communicates.
Many people are surprised to learn that mediumship development begins with the medium, not with Spirit. Understanding yourself is the foundation your mediumship is built on.
I often tell my students that our own healing and our understanding of our life paths are incredibly important. Looking at how we arrived at this time and place in our lives is all part of developing and understanding our sensitivity.
Create a Daily Spiritual Practice
One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is consistency. Even ten or fifteen minutes a day spent meditating or Sitting in the Power can gradually strengthen your awareness and deepen your connection with Spirit.

Those quiet moments help you become more present, more peaceful, and more open to what you are experiencing.
Mediumship development usually isn’t about one dramatic experience. More often, it’s lots of small moments that slowly build your confidence and trust. Finding time to sit quietly, reflect, sit in the power of the soul, and bring more peace into your life is all part of the unfoldment.
Find a Teacher You Connect With
Learning from an experienced teacher who you connect with can make an enormous difference.
Your teacher can become an important part of the foundation of your development, so finding the right person really does matter. A good teacher offers much more than techniques or exercises. They provide guidance, honest feedback, encouragement, and a safe space where you can learn without being afraid of making mistakes.
Look for someone who values evidence, integrity, compassion, and ethical practice rather than promising instant results.
True mediumship isn’t about impressing people. It’s about serving people with humility and love.
Join a Development Circle
One of the most valuable parts of mediumship development is practising with other people.
A supportive development circle gives you the chance to practise regularly, receive helpful feedback, and build confidence in a welcoming environment. You’ll also quickly discover that everyone has moments of doubt and uncertainty. It doesn’t matter how long someone has been developing.
Some of the strongest friendships can come from development circles because everyone is learning and growing together. And that really is a beautiful thing.
Having friends and people around you who understand your development can be incredibly important and uplifting.
Be Patient
We live in a world where we expect things to happen quickly, but mediumship unfolds in its own time. For me personally, it was years of development before I felt ready to take on the responsibility of sitting with a client and holding space for them.
Mediumship is a lot like learning a musical instrument. It takes dedication, practice, and patience. Some days everything seems to flow beautifully. Other days can feel very quiet. Both are part of the learning process.
Every medium continues learning throughout their lifetime. Development isn’t a destination. It’s a lifelong journey.
Live Your Spiritual Philosophy
The quality of your mediumship is also influenced by the way you live your everyday life.
Kindness, honesty, compassion, gratitude, humility, and personal responsibility all play a part in strengthening your connection with Spirit. The Spirit world isn’t looking for perfection. It responds to authenticity.
As you continue to grow spiritually, your mediumship naturally grows with you.
Enjoy the Journey
Many people begin developing their mediumship believing they eventually need to become professional mediums. That simply isn’t true.
Some people do choose to work professionally. Others develop because they want to deepen their understanding of Spirit, connect with family and friends, strengthen their intuition, or experience the comfort of knowing that love continues beyond this life.
Whatever your reason for beginning, give yourself permission to enjoy the process instead of focusing only on where you think it needs to lead. Every meditation, every exercise, and every experience is helping you grow.
Remember, every experienced medium began exactly where you are today — with a single step and an inquiring mind.
