How I Recognize the Shift in Energy and the Presence of Spirit

People often ask me, “Arlene, how do you know when Spirit arrives?”

It is one of the most beautiful parts of mediumship—subtle, quiet, and deeply sacred. It is the gentle blending of souls as the spirit world draws near, offering their love, their memories, and their essence.

Before any evidence or messages are shared, there is a soft shift in my awareness. My energy becomes calm, my breathing settles, and a stillness moves through the room. My mind becomes peaceful—free from the tasks of the day—and I step into a passive, receptive state.

In this softened awareness, I begin to sense the delicate whispers of Spirit. It often feels as though the atmosphere becomes infused with a presence that is familiar yet not my own. This is the first sign for me that a loved one is drawing close.

Finding The Stillness

Mediumship begins in stillness. As I allow my energy to settle, my consciousness gently expands, making room for Spirit. The sensation is quiet and tender, like a loving hand resting softly on your back—you sense them before you see or greet them.

The air may feel slightly heavier yet somehow uplifting at the same time. These small shifts let me know that the blending is beginning. It is never intrusive. Spirit communicates with grace, intention, and a profound respect for the connection.

Blending With Spirit

As Spirit steps closer, their essence begins to blend with mine. This is where their personality begins to shine through. I may feel emotions, memories, or qualities that do not belong to me.

Long before evidence arrives, I can often sense their love, their humour, their gentleness, their strength, their unique way of being.  Just as they were in life, they come forward with the same personality in Spirit.

A quiet father blends gently; an outgoing sister arrives with brightness and enthusiasm. The blending of two souls—one here, one in Spirit—is the foundation of meaningful, evidential communication.

Examples of Spirit Blending from My Work

The Grandmother with the Apron
During one reading, I found myself straightening my back and smoothing my hands as though softening an apron. Before a single detail appeared, I knew a grandmother was present—warm, nurturing, and the quiet heart of her family. She later showed her kitchen, her baking, and the strength of her matriarchal role.

The Playful Young Man
Another time, I felt a rush of joyful, impulsive energy, as though someone had joyfully flopped onto a chair beside me. His humour, his spark, and his mischief were immediate. His mother confirmed that this was exactly how he moved through the world.

The Woman Who Loved Music
In another session, a woman blended by lifting my chest gently, making me feel as though music was moving through me. Before any images arrived, I knew she had a musical soul. Her son later validated her love for melodies and sound.

How Spirit Arrives

These sensations—the emotional tones, personality traits, and subtle impressions—are Spirit’s way of helping us feel them before we fully know them.  From my experience working with spirit over the years, its so important to blend well with those who have passed as this is the first part of a session with a client and one that is important to feel and sense our loved ones correctly.

It is a common misconception that Spirit arrive with force, loudness, or drama. This is not the case at all. There is no booming voice or overwhelming sensation. Instead, Spirit builds the connection through trust, stillness, and partnership. The moment they step in is often soft, tender, and deeply loving.

Real Moments from My Readings

In a recent reading, a father’s energy entered the space long before the evidence. His presence felt steady, warm, and extremely protective. His daughter confirmed that this mirrored how he cared for her in life.

Another time, during a session for a grieving sister, Spirit entered through emotion rather than imagery. A wave of joy and reunion washed over me—her unmistakable lightness, humour, and love. Her sister immediately recognized her.

And during a public demonstration, a man stepped forward with a vibrant, unmistakable energy. He showed me ashtrays piled high and made me aware of his love for cigarettes. His wife burst into laughter and tears, amazed at the clear personality evidence.

These gentle shifts—the softening, the stillness, the blending—are the doorway to their stories, their essence, and the enduring truth of continued life.

Spirit arrives with love, always.
